Journalism and Mass Communication
The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University seeks a founding dean to lead this top-ranked program in journalism and mass communication as it becomes an independent unit, slated to anchor a planned Capital Center campus in downtown Phoenix.
The Schools founding dean must provide academic leadership and guidance and direct fund-raising efforts for a superb, growing faculty at a major metropolitan research university. The Cronkite School dean will join a university-wide administrative council of distinguished deans.
The Cronkite School offers instruction in journalism for print and electronic media, public relations/strategic communication and mass communication to more than 1,800 undergraduate students and 85 graduate students. The full-time faculty includes several members who have been honored with national awards for teaching, research or service. On July 1, 2005 the School will become independent of ASUs College of Public Programs. The university administration has designated the School and the ASU-owned PBS affiliate, KAET-TV, to become key components of a new 15,000-student campus in Phoenix. The Arizona state capital is the nations fifth largest city, 15th largest media market and hub of one of the countrys fastest growing metropolitan areas.
Cronkite School students earn the highest achievements in university journalism, scoring consistently within the top 10 and frequently in the top five nationally in such competitions as the Hearst Journalism Awards Program and the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence awards. In 2004 alone, Cronkite School students received more than 50 regional and national awards, including two students who were Hearst Broadcast Writing Championship finalists.
The successful candidate must have established a record of excellence EITHER: 1) as an academic, as evidenced by (a) a terminal degree in journalism, mass communications or related field; and (b) teaching, research/creative activity and service appropriate to the rank of tenured professor; OR (2) as a media professional, as evidenced by (a) a bachelors degree in a related field; (b) 10 years of major media experience; and (c) evidence of interactions with knowledge of higher education.
Desired qualifications include: (1) administrative or management experience, including some combination of supervision, budgeting, planning and/or program development; (2) entrepreneurial experience, including resource generation, proposal development and fiscal management; (3) a track record of successful diversity efforts; (4) a significant leadership role in national professional organizations.
ASU, the nations fifth largest university, is a member of the PAC-10, and it ranks among the first-rate research universities in the country and in the top seven in the number of National Merit Scholars among its undergraduates. Of its total undergraduates, 24 percent come from out-of-state and 20 percent are minorities.
